About the Program

Jacksonville Community Pet Clinics occasionally offers a limited number of low-cost spay/neuter vouchers for those in our community who qualify. The program is funded by our clinic as well as through donations from our Angel Fund. Our goal is to help control pet overpopulation in Jacksonville and the surrounding area.  Not to mention, there are numerous benefits to both pets and their owners.  This is NOT a free service.  Vouchers are offered on a first-come, first-served basis and must be presented at the time of surgery. All spay/neuter voucher surgeries will be performed ONLY at our West location and ONLY on select dates.  This webpage will be updated, indicating when vouchers are available.

Why You Should Spay/Neuter Your Pet

Choosing to spay or neuter your pet demonstrates your commitment to being a responsible pet parent.  It’s a simple yet crucial step in ensuring your pet’s well-being.  There are numerous benefits to these procedures, both for you and your pet.

Prevent Pet Overpopulation

The most evident benefit of spaying and neutering is its impact on pet overpopulation. Unplanned litters of puppies and kittens contribute to the overcrowding of animal shelters and the unfortunate euthanizing of countless animals each year. By spaying or neutering your pet, you play a significant role in reducing this problem, ultimately helping to save lives.

Health Benefits

Spaying and neutering can offer a range of health benefits to your pet. In females, spaying eliminates the risk of uterine infections and drastically reduces the risk of mammary gland tumors. In males, neutering prevents testicular cancer and reduces the likelihood of prostate problems. These procedures can also prevent certain behavioral issues related to mating instincts, such as roaming and aggression.

Improved Behavior

Behavioral problems associated with mating instincts can be challenging for both pet owners and the animals themselves. Neutering and spaying can significantly reduce these issues. Male dogs, for instance, are less likely to exhibit aggressive or territorial behaviors, and female cats won’t go into heat, preventing loud, unsettling vocalizations.

Longer Lifespan

The combined health and behavioral benefits of spaying and neutering contribute to a potentially longer and happier life for your pet. Neutered and spayed animals are generally less prone to accidents and injuries resulting from roaming in search of a mate. Their reduced risk of certain cancers and infections can extend their lifespan, providing you with more quality time together.

Financial Savings

In the long run, spaying and neutering your pet can lead to financial savings. Preventing health issues and unwanted pregnancies can spare you from costly veterinary bills and other expenses associated with caring for a litter of puppies or kittens.

When You Should Spay/Neuter Your Pet

The AVMA, American Association of Feline Practitioners, Association of Shelter Veterinarians, and numerous cat advocacy groups all endorse the practice of spaying or neutering cats by the age of 5 months. This recommendation is rooted in the well-established advantages of sterilization, coupled with the absence of any evidence suggesting harm associated with the timing of the procedure.

However, when it comes to dogs, there isn’t a universally applicable guideline. The ideal timing for spaying or neutering is as unique as your specific pet.

At Jacksonville Community Pet Clinics, we can walk you through the benefits and risks of spaying and neutering, and answer any questions you might have so you can make an informed decision.
